Community Development Partnerships

Community Development Partnerships

In addition to affordable housing, the Central Vermont Community Land Trust has a growing commitment to community and economic development. Using its extensive experience and knowledge in non-profit development, CVCLT has been an invaluable resource to many community organizations that the Community Land Trust partners with. In all cases, collaborations are designed to strengthen the social fabric of some aspect of the Central Vermont community.

Past Projects

Studio Place Arts (SPA)

The Nichols Block, a burned-out, derelict building in the heart of downtown Barre was slated for demolition in 1998. Saved from that fate, it is now Central Vermont's major visual arts center. Financing the rehabilitation project was made possible using historic tax credits and a Community Development Block Grant. Completed in 2000 at a total development cost of $860,000, SPA now includes artists' studios, a teaching space for art classes, and a non-profit gallery operated by SPA.

Battered Women's Shelter Services

Approached by Battered Women's Shelter Services, CVCLT participated in the construction of a new addition to the existing shelter, thereby increasing much needed office, counseling space and handicapped accessible facilities.

Good Neighbors, Inc.

In 2002, CVCLT teamed with Good Neighbors, Inc. and the Central Vermont Community Action Council to address the need for transitional housing in Central Vermont. In 2004 the partnership completed the acquisition and rehabilitation of 81 Elm Street into a family transitional housing facility with three apartments.

Cabot Commons

After more than three years of organizing and planning, a community group called Cabot Commons has worked with CVCLT to develop eight units of senior housing. Open in January 2005, these all-new handicapped accessible units are aimed to give Cabot residents — or former long-term residents — an opportunity to continue to live in their home town during their senior years.
